Alvin Carlyle Fennell, Jr SGM (Ret) passed away earlier this week. He is preceded in death by his father Alvin C. Fennell, Sr and his mother Mary Augusta Fennell nee Gaines.
He was born in Chester, SC in 1933. The family moved to Charlotte when he was a child. He graduated from Harding High in Charlotte, NC in 1952. After graduating from high school he worked in a local grocery store in Charlotte in the produce section. He was promoted to the produce manager. He joined the Army when he was 19. He qualified for Green Beret Special Forces Group soon after Kennedy implemented the program. He qualified for jump status and jumped out of perfectly good airplanes. He served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He received the following decorations: National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Good Conduct Medal (6 Awards), Combat Infantry Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Parachutist Badge, Meritorious Service Medal ( 1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Humanitarian Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Medal, Expert Qualification Badge Rifle M-16. He retired with 27 years from the Army. After retirement from the Army he worked at the Fayetteville VA Hospital in the Warehouse for an additional 10 years.
He leaves behind the following family members: his wife of 53 years, Margaret Fennell, a brother and sister-in-law Johnny and Betty Fennell of Charlotte, NC, two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and George P. Carnes of Clarksville, VA and Lynn Fennell of Chapel Hill, NC. Grandchildren Ronald Munroe, Jr of the home and Jennifer Ward and her husband Stephen Ward of Raleigh, NC. He also leaves behind two great grand children, Richard Isaac Ward and Lucas Fennell Ward of Raleigh, NC.
The family will receive friends from 11 to 12 pm, Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Pinecrest Funeral & Cremation Services in Hope Mills, NC. A graveside service will follow at Cumberland Memorial Gardens on Raeford Road in Fayetteville.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations are made to the Hope Mills Presbyterian Church 3712 S. Main Street in Hope Mills. Condolences may be left at pinecrestfuneralservice.com.
