Don graduated from Iowa State University in 1967 and started as a Mechanical Engineer that same year with DuPont in Parkersburg, West Virginia. In 1972 he relocated the family to Clear Lake City, Texas and continued his work as a Mechanical Engineer for 8 years. While in Clear Lake City, he was an active member of the volunteer fire department. In the Spring of 1980 he and the family came to Fayetteville where Don became the Safety Supervisor at the Fayetteville Works plant. His experiences and training as a firefighter in Texas proved useful, and he worked closely with Fayetteville and Cumberland County Emergency Response personnel and other corporate Safety Supervisors in the area to develop a coordinated Hazardous Materials Response system. Prior to retiring in 2001, he moved back into a Mechanical Engineering role.
Don was an avid "D.I.Y"-er, never afraid to tackle any home-improvement project. He also enjoyed automobile repair, fishing, playing cards with his family, scroll sawing, general woodworking, and several other hand-crafts. He shared many of these interests with his family.
Don taught and led by example and will be greatly and deeply missed.
