Dorothy Gardner Hart, after ninety amazing years with us, died Sunday, August 7, 2011. She leaves behind a loving family, numerous friends and a legacy of goodwill, humor and compassion. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, John and Amy Gardner, eight siblings and her beloved husband of 45 years, Earl E. Hart.
Dorothy was born on June 13, 1921 in Cheraw, SC. She was one of twelve siblings which produced a huge extended family. She was very dedicated to her large family and enjoyed a closeness with them throughout her life. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and proud grandmother.
During her life as an officer's wife, the Army sent this small town girl from South Carolina to places that she never imagined seeing. She and her husband and three children traveled extensively including stations in numerous states, as well as, Japan and Europe. After Dorothy's husband retired, the family settled in Hope Mills, NC and became involved in their community as they embraced this town as their home.
Dorothy was a devout Christian and her abiding faith guided her active life. She was a founding member of Southview Baptist Church in Hope Mills. She was always willing to volunteer in any capacity needed at church. She and her husband traveled on two different occasions as missionaries to spread the word of God and help establish churches for underserved communities. As well as, being in the church choir, Dorothy would visit local resthomes to play the piano and sing for the residents. She delivered Meals on Wheels and visited shut-ins that were greatly in need of companionship. She will always be remembered for her sweet demeanor and kindness to others.
She is survived by three children John Hart, Dolores Lee and Sherry Meredith, as well as, nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister and two brothers.
