Dr. Carol L. Higy, 62, of Fayetteville, died Saturday, September 23, 2017 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Born on March 10, 1955 in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of Richard W. Higy and the late Stella A. Higy.
She is survived by her father, Richard W. Higy; siblings, Cheryl A. (Edwin R.) Bennett of California, Terry L. (Marla) Higy of Tennessee, Charles A. (Anita) Higy of West Virginia; and three nieces, five nephews, six grandnieces, and six grandnephews.
Carol graduated from Springfield High School in 1973, and received her B.S. in Education from Malone College in 1977, M.S. in Education from The University of Akron in 1981, and her Ph.D. in Education Administration from The University of Akron in 1988.
Highlighting her illustrious career, Carol was a Volleyball, Basketball, and Track Coach and Teacher of Physical Education and Health at Canton Central Catholic High School in Canton, OH, Basketball Coach and Instructor of Physical Education at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, Physical Education Department Chair at Gardner Webb in Boling Springs, NC, Program Coordinator for the Special Olympics of Cleveland County, Physical Education Department Chair at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC, Assistant Principal at Howard Hall Elementary and Westover Middle Schools, and Associate Dean of Education from 2008 to 2012 at UNC Pembroke in NC, where since 2012, she was Associate Professor of Education.
Through her professional development, Carol was a reviewer of numerous articles and books, lead presenter of various professional conferences, coauthor of Discovering the Teacher Within You: An Introduction to Education in North America, and recipient of numerous awards.
Carol loved travelling, sports, reading, bicycling, fishing, and kayaking.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Rita Wiggs and Jackie Kruger, the staff at UNC Hospitals, and her many close friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Cancer Research Institute, the Special Olympics of Cleveland County, NC, or the ASPCA of Fayetteville, NC.
