Eugene Bruster "Gene" Webb, age 87, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at his home in Fayetteville.
He was born Nov. 22, 1926, in Bakersville, to the late Harry R. Webb and Nell Sparks.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gregory P. Webb; his brothers, Hale Webb and Harley Webb; and sisters, Wanda Robison and Shirley Taylor.
Gene grew up in the mountain community of Loafer's Glory. During World War II, he joined the Navy, serving at the naval air training station in Pensacola, Fla. After completing his naval service, he joined the Army and over the next 20 years, served in Greenland, England and Germany, where he met his wife Gudrun.
After leaving military service he worked at numerous businesses in the Fayetteville area, finally retiring in the 1990s to spend his time traveling and gardening, among other activities.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gudrun Thorn Webb; sons, Michael R. Webb of Davis, Calif., and Kenneth G. Webb of Raleigh; daughters-in-law, Nicole E. Rabaud and Patricia S. Webb: sisters, Amelia Ledford of Bakersville and Shelba (Kenneth) Sparks of Burnsville; and grandchildren Amanda (Adam) Wood, Ryan Webb, Marie Webb, Chloe Webb and Sophie Webb.
Gene was an unpretentious man who believed in hard work, honesty and helping others in need. He loved to make people laugh and will be greatly missed by all those who knew him well.
The family will receive visitors from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Pinecrest Funeral & Cremation Services in Hope Mills. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2014, at the funeral home, with a burial ceremony following at 2 p.m. in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.
