Harvey Turner, a beloved friend, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and cousin, passed away peacefully at his home in NC, on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Born on November 11, 1946, in Yamagata City, Japan, Harvey spent his life in Cumberland County, NC, where he became a cherished member of the community.
Harvey is survived by the love of his life, Teresa, with whom he shared 41 wonderful years, his son Harvey Lee (Delores), granddaughter Jessica, and great-grandchildren Dyllon, and Josaline Shigeko. He is also remembered by his siblings: Thelma T. Boutwell, Bennie (Kerry) Turner, Jess Turner, and Doris T. Kriz, as well as his lifelong best friend Mike Goff, his “Fav Cuz”, and many beloved nephews, nieces, cousins, and many very special friends and family across the country.
Preceded in death by his parents, Shigeko and Bennie Golden Turner, Sr., and his brother William, Harvey leaves behind a legacy of love and connection that touched everyone he met. He was a passionate genealogist, dedicating countless hours to exploring his family history and ensuring that his family bonds remained strong. His cherished family reunions in Harlan County, Kentucky were a highlight of his life, where he delighted in sharing stories, enjoying folk dances, and making memories with family amidst the beauty of the mountains at the Pine Mountain Settlement School and Benham Schoolhouse Inn.
Harvey had a zest for life that shone through in all his activities. He loved spending time with family at the beach, going on adventures to the mountains, and coordinating the annual Emerald Isle Beach Trip, where he brought family and friends together for years. He was a loyal friend and always ready to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbors. His interests included hunting, fishing, golfing, and swimming, and he was an active member of his community, serving as President of the neighborhood HOA for several years. He also contributed to the community by supporting the annual Fayetteville Animal Protection Society’s “Woofstock” fundraiser. He enjoyed visiting the Cumberland County Wildlife Club and was always learning. He was a simple man who always welcomed dining with friends, especially at his favorite, Captain George’s at Myrtle Beach.
Throughout his career, Harvey was a man of many talents—he was a personal injury investigator, photographer, worked in retail, and lent his skills as a gemologist and horologist. Most recently, he enjoyed his work with the Census Bureau.
At Harvey's request, there will be no service, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was a truly special man, loved and respected by everyone fortunate enough to cross his path. In his honor, may we all cherish our family and friends a little more and hold our memories close.
