Herbert Munro Ayars passed into the hands of the Lord on September 21, 2014 at UNC Hospital. Mr. Ayars was born on April 20, 1929 in Bridgeton, New Jersey to Albert and Lavinia Ayars. He served our country in the United States Army from 1947 until 1968 earning the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2. During that time, Mr. Ayars served in the Korean War as part of the First Cavalry Division and in Vietnam as part of the 196th Light Infantry Brigade. Among his commendations was the Bronze Star for meritorious service as armament section leader for the 196th.
After retiring from the army, Mr. Ayars served the families of Cumberland County for 25 years as a teacher and guidance counselor at Cape Fear High School. Upon his retirement from the state of North Carolina, Mr. Ayars served as guidance counselor at Fayetteville Christian School for 15 years. He was also a lector coordinator and Eucharistic minister at Saint Patrick Catholic Church.
Mr. Ayars leaves us with a legacy of honesty, hard work, and love of God, family, and neighbor. He epitomized Christian love in his daily interactions with everyone.
Mr. Ayars is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sylvia Anne Ayars (Kuna) of Fayetteville; daughter, Maryann Ayars of Fayetteville; son Herbert James Ayars and daughter in law, Jennifer Ayars of Southern Pines. Mr. Ayars was also blessed with two grandchildren, Victoria Ann Ayars and James Matthew Ayars, both of Southern Pines.
St. Patrick Catholic Church on Village Drive and Fayetteville Christian School on Ireland Drive, both in Fayetteville, were always dear to him.
