Joyce Ann Matthews

Joyce Ann Matthews, 79 of Hope Mills, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

Born December 26, 1943 in Cumberland County, Joyce is the daughter of the late Roy Johnson and Marion Musselwhite Johnson. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Matthews; daughter, Angela Michelle Tyson; and siblings, JR Johnson, Helen Stevenson and husband Bob, Donald Johnson, and Stacy H. Johnson.

Joyce is survived by her son, Edgar E. Burgess, Jr. and wife Lorie of Greenwood, SC; son, Bryan K. Burgess, also of Greenwood; son, Giles Art Burgess and wife Karen of Saluda, SC; grandchildren, Ashton Burgess, Easton Burgess, Mason Burgess, Zachery Tyson, Cody Tyson, and Grace Burgess; siblings, Lloyd D. Johnson and wife Kathie, Michael D. Johnson and wife Barbara, Beverly Yourell and husband Dave, and Richard Johnson and wife Karen; sisters-in-law, Janice Johnson and Sandra Johnson; and a host of other family members and friends.

Along with her brother Richard, Joyce owned and operated Captain J’s Seafood Restaurant in Hope Mills for several years, and also worked as a bus driver for the state of NC. She was a devout Christian and longtime member of Unity Community Church (formerly known as First United Baptist Church) in Hope Mills.

Joyce was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
