HOPE MILLS - Max B. Smith, Sr., 72, was called home to Heaven in the early morning hours of June 18, 2010. He slipped away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus while at home.

Funeral Services will be held at Green Springs Baptist Church in Parkton, NC on Monday, June 21 at 11:00am. The family will receive friends at Pinecrest Funeral and Cremation Service in Hope Mills, NC on Sunday, June 20 from 6:00- 8:00pm.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 49 years, Phyllis; children Sherri Williams and husband Denny of Raleigh, NC, Stephanie Crickenberger and Husband Jack of Thomasville, NC, Max Smith, Jr (Moe) and wife Christy of Mint Hill, NC, grandchildren; Haley, Jackson, Jacob, Noah, Kyle, Abigail, Leah and Julia; Sisters, Marilyn McLean and Elaine Wolfe and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Smith was born March 18, 1938 in Grays Creek, NC to Murphy B. and Maxine Riddle Smith who predeceased him. He is also predeceased by a brother, Dennis Smith

Mr. Smith was a proud US Air Force veteran. He married Phyllis in 1961 and they raised their family in Winston-Salem, NC. Mr. Smith was the owner and operator of the shoe departments in the Mother and Daughter stores. He later moved back to Cumberland County where he owned and operated several shoe stores. Prior to retiring, he worked for Sears.

He was an active member of Green Springs Baptist Church in Parkton, NC where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendant and Teacher and President of the Brotherhood.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Edward Levine of Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem NC, hospice nurse, David and Josh with Quality Care who all cared for Max during his long illness.

Mr. Smith was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend whose legacy will live on through the lives of those he touched.
