Mr. Mike "Poncho" Boyer was surrounded by family and friends at his home when he exchanged this life for life eternal and went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 13, 2016. Mike-Poncho, 55, was born in Okinawa on August 10, 1961, to the late Charles Donnelly Boyer and Kazuko Tsuha Boyer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, James Davis. When Mike was 7 years of age, his dad was a casualty of the Vietnam War, and Mr. Davis cared for Mike as his own son.
Mike-Poncho is survived by his beloved wife of 8 years, Angela Renee Boyer of Fayetteville; 2 stepchildren, Michael Pittman and Olivia Caudle both of Fayetteville; a sister, Kathy Boyer of Fayetteville; and treasured family pets, dog Sockie and cat Grayson.
Shortly after meeting Renee, the love of his life, Mike-Poncho started attending Faith Wesleyan Church and began there his journey of faith in Jesus Christ. His ministry began immediately after his conversion and never wavered. He was elected by the church congregation to serve on the local church board and was a trustee. After immersing himself in church and personal Bible studies, he was recruited to teach a teen SS class, and those teens truly loved their Poncho. He served a number of years as a lay delegate to the district conference of The Wesleyan Church. Even after Mike-Poncho's strength was greatly diminished by the disease that took his life, he continued his ministry of witnessing to others by sending texts with scripture and encouragement.
Being the kind, gentle, and humble man that he was, Mike-Poncho did not recognize the magnitude of his talents and abilities. He was a master guitarist and accompanied the church worship team and congregational singing every Sunday and the youth ministry every Wednesday evening. A key member in the church choir, he was often chosen to sing solos. Whether singing or playing his guitar, Mike-Poncho's music always resonated with the love of God, and others were blessed. In addition to his church music, he often shared God through his testimony and music with those confined to a nursing home. With a keen sense of humor, a genuine smile, and a twinkle in his eye, he easily drew others in and held them as life-long friends in his heart.
Mike-Poncho's life was an example of faithfulness and loyalty. He cherished his dear Renee and loved Michael and Olivia as his own children. He loved God, his church family, his community, and his job. A master mechanic, he was often referred to as a "vehicle whisperer." If it was broken, he could fix it. A true-blue Ford man, Mike-Poncho began working for Ford Motor Company in 1987 with Patrick Ford, then Lafayette Ford, and lastly Lumberton Ford where he was working at the time of his illness and subsequent death.
Angela Renee and family express deepest appreciation to their Faith Wesleyan Church family, their Lumberton Ford family, and other friends and family members for their many acts of kindness and support.
A memorial service and celebration of life for Mike-Poncho Boyer will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Faith Wesleyan Church, 2922 Legion Road, Fayetteville, NC with Pastors Cyndi McClendon and Wayne Chandler officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mike-Poncho's memory to Mrs. Angela Renee Boyer or to the music ministry at Faith Wesleyan Church.
