Randy Dean Ledford, 62, of Hope Mills, NC died unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday April 14, 2015.
Randy was born December 31st 1952 in Gaffney, SC to Bryan Hayes Ledford and Joyce Ponder Ledford. He grew up in Asheville, NC and moved to Fayetteville, NC his sophomore year of high school where he graduated from Seventy-First high school in 1971. He went on to graduate from UNC-Pembroke in 1975 where he was an All-American baseball player.
He started his coaching/teaching career at Westover High School in 1978. Then he continued his career at Southview High School in 1984 where he was the head coach of baseball until 2006 and also coached football and eventually became the head football coach in 1993, where he was still active today. Mr. Ledford was the only active football coach in Cumberland County who was involved with two state championship teams, and both occurred in the same calendar year. Randy was awarded the NC Order of the Long Leaf pine award presented by the governor to individuals for their extraordinary service to the state and had just recently been inducted into the Fayetteville Sports Club Hall of Fame.
Randy was a faithful member, deacon and Sunday School teacher at Southview Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father Bryan Hayes Ledford; his step father, J. Hugh Mauney; his paternal grandparents, Clarence Theodore and Eula Hayes Ledford; and his maternal grandparents, Robert Hoyle and Mattie Shuford Ponder.
He leaves his beloved wife Margaret Parrish Ledford; son, Bryan Ledford and wife Patty and two grandsons, Cruz and Hayes Ledford of Holly Springs, NC; son, Bradley Ledford and wife Melissa and two granddaughters, Kaylee and Eden of Hope Mills, NC; son, Bryce Ledford and wife Ashley and one granddaughter Aven of Hope Mills, NC; mother, Joyce Ledford Mauney of Shelby, NC; two brothers, Roddy Ledford and wife Linda of Greer, SC; Reggie Ledford and his wife Jeri of Shelby, NC; and many additional family members, players, coaches, and friends.
Randy was married to Margaret almost 40 years this August, and was a great husband, father, son, brother and grandfather. He worked hard but also liked to have fun by gardening, golfing, and spending time with his grandkids. His strong faith has given his family peace.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 18, 2015 in Southview Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Brian Kinlaw. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
