Retired US Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Travis Curwood Barbour, 82, of Fayetteville, took his final ride now resting in the arms of his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 succumbing to terminal cancer.
Travis was born July 30, 1933, to the late Neumer T. Barbour and Vennie Phillips Barbour. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Wallace and Sheldon Barbour.
Travis was a lifetime member of Stoney Point Baptist Church tirelessly serving in many capacities over the years. He occupied what was known as the "Barbour" pew where his family always sat. It will not be the same to see the void left on the left side on row 4. He was faithful to his church which had a special place in his heart.
Travis was a Vietnam Veteran and also served in several other overseas assignments during his tour with the Marine Corps. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he later went to work at Fort Bragg eventually retiring from Civil Service. He was an active member of Masonic Lodge # 306, Raeford, NC.
Travis had an innate love for the beauty of nature and the outdoors. He enjoyed sitting in the outdoor swing watching the cars go by waving/hollering at those he knew. There will be an emptiness left on the corner of Barbour Lake Road without him being there. He took great pride in his vegetable garden and always enjoyed sharing it with family and friends. Travis enjoyed fishing and hosting family fish fries, and loved watching NASCAR races. He was very gifted in woodcraftsmanship (a Barbour trait) building magazine racks, stools, bird houses, cedar chests, etc. as keepsakes to pass on to various ones dear to him.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Hobson Barbour, a daughter, Cecilia Ann Barbour, Raeford, NC, a son, Travis Anthony Barbour and one grandson, Ruston Barbour, 17, both of Cincinnati, Ohio. Rus was his pride and joy blessing his grandpa with his creative artistic drawings. He is also survived by three sisters, Alice McCarthy, Gail Rose and Corinna Clouston (Jim); as well as a brother, Dennis Barbour, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and numerous close friends.
Travis wanted an overwhelming expression of gratitude from him and his family to all the family, friends and care givers for all the love, cards, visits, food and endless support throughout the journey while battling his terminal illness. A special thanks also to Stoney Point Fire Department and Cape Fear Valley Homecare and Hospice. He will be remembered as a long and committed friend to his community.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Stoney Point Baptist Church, 6554 Rockfish Road, Fayetteville, NC. Interment will immediately follow at the church cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:45 p.m. prior to the funeral service at Stoney Point Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Travis' name to either Stoney Point Fire Department or Disabled Veterans, Cumberland County Chapter #46, 520 Johnson Street, Fayetteville, NC 28303.
