William Dwight "Dumpy" Butler, age 77, had a new address change to Glory on Monday November 4, 2024. The son of Bertha Mae Butler, he was born on Thursday, October 16, 1947, in Cumberland, North Carolina.
He was a graduate of the Class of 1965 from Hope Mills High School and went on to continue his education at Fayetteville Technical Institute.
During his school years, he worked farming tobacco and framing new homes. In his spare time he played high school baseball as a catcher, where he earned his nick name "Dumpy" for being short stature and stocky.
After graduating FTI, Dumpy worked at Cape Fear Feed Products. He soon learned the tolerance for the stench left more to desire. His education and experience lead him to a career working as a foreman with Daniels Construction for DuPont of Fayetteville and then on to Front Royal, Virginia.
Due to the required time away from his wife and children, he decided to start his own business Butler’s Welding Service. Not long afterwards he would be approached by his favorite welding instructor Mr. Jim Christy who highly recommended him to fill his position as an instructor. This soon grew, advancing into Department Chair of Welding and then retired after 25 years as Director for Vocational Curriculums.
He was an avid sportsman in his day with tons of stories to tell. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, restoring old tractors and most of all...continuously improving the power in his sled pulling lawn mower known as the "Super Trooper”. Almost every day of retirement and even on his last day here on earth, numerous hours were spent in the shop he built by hand. If a part couldn’t be bought...he would set his mind into deep thought sometime for days and would figure out a way to make what was needed. He had a perfectionistic demeanor backed by a strong will of “I can” and "I will”.
His strong faith in God ran deep that was shown by his way of living and the words he spoke. He was always willing to give of himself. He would give the shirt off his back and lend a helping hand and words of encouragement to all, no matter who you were and no matter when you needed him.
He is survived by his bride, Brenda of the home for 57 years; his daughter, Teresa Thompkins and her husband Trent; and daughter, Susan Daniel; his three grandchildren, Jessica Thompkins Connor and her husband Colby, Bradley Daniel and his wife Kelsey, and Steven Thompkins II and his wife Sydney; and three great grandchildren, Bryson Daniel, Khloe Daniel, and Landon Connor.
